Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal In a Weekend

Sometimes the thought of tackling outdoor projects can feel overwhelming.  If you are in the market to sell your house, you might also feel extra pressure.  Improving your curb appeal is essential when you are selling.  It is the first impression potential buyers will be experiencing with your home.  Many agents, including myself, often recommend to buyers to do a drive by of the house to make sure the location fits them.  If curb appeal is low, I will sometimes have clients tell me they don’t even want to schedule a showing.  Start tackling some of these projects that fit your situation!

  • Paint your front door.  Do you have paint peeling or very faded wood?  Putting a fresh coat of paint or stain on your front door goes a long way.
  • Remove and/or add new flowers/plants.  Think about taking out overgrown bushes and planting new perennials.  Plant fresh colorful flowers in flower beds or pots around walkway and front door.
  • Mulch garden beds.  There is nothing like the look of fresh mulch.  Does such a long way!  I recommend a dark color like black to add a contrast color to bright color flowers and bright green grass.
  • Power wash your driveway, walkway and exterior.  Makes everything look fresh and new…and clean!
  • Install a new mailbox.  The mailbox often gets overlooked but make sure it’s in good shape before selling.
  • Make sure your house numbers are in good shape and visible.  Another one that often gets forgotten about.
  • Clean your gutters and windows.  These are two things that new buyers don’t want to tackle when they move in.
  • Refresh patio furniture.  If you have a front porch, updating the furniture or cushions can add curb appeal.  Or maybe it’s actually adding patio furniture to an empty porch.  I also like to caution homeowners to not add too much furniture to the porch.  Less is sometimes more.
  • Reduce unnecessary items/clutter in the yard. This would include getting rid of broken hoses, random trashcans, kids toys, etc.  Sometimes, this might also mean reducing the amount of gardening decor.  There is such a thing as too many gnomes in the garden!
  • Update or install outdoor lighting.  Adding pathway lights or accent lights to your home and really add value.  If you have lights already installed, make sure they all work and replace any bulbs as necessary.
