Steps to Safeguard Your Home When Selling

When it comes to selling your house, ensuring its safety is crucial for your peace of mind. As an agent, I try to make the selling process as least stressful as I can.  Taking proactive measures to protect your home not only safeguards your belongings but also provides a sense of security during the selling process. Here are a couple things to consider.

  • Use a Supra Lockbox:  Have your agent use a Supra Lockbox.  Supra lockboxes contain the keys to your property and are only accessible to those people that pay a membership fee to the service.  These are real estate agent, appraisers, inspectors, etc.  Each time someone unlocks the supra with their phone (through an app), it is logged and tracked.  It allows for accountability which motivates anyone accessing the house to make sure everything is locked up before we leave.

  • Conduct a Thorough Security Assessment:  Check your house for weak locks, broken windows, or outdated alarm systems. This assessment will help you understand what needs to be updated/improved to make your home more safe.

  • Enhance Outdoor Lighting: Proper outdoor lighting plays a significant role in deterring intruders. Make sure that there is light especially in dark areas of your yard. Motion lights can be extremely helpful here.

  • Secure Valuables and Personal Information:  I often stress to those selling to declutter and de-personalize your home.  This is helpful for not only allowing buyers to envision themselves in your home but is also a security measure.  You want to make sure you store jewelry, important documents, and electronic devices in a secure location, such as a locked safe or at a storage place outside of the home. Additionally, keep personal information, like bills and mail, out of sight to protect your identity.

  • Consider a Home Security System: Investing in a home security system offers added protection for your property. Choose a system that includes features like surveillance cameras, door/window sensors, and a monitored alarm system. Prominently display signs or stickers to let potential buyers know your home is equipped with a security system.

  • Communicate with Your Real Estate Agent: If you have safety concerns, talk to us!  We are here to guide you through the process.  It is also advantageous to tell us about the security system you have set up in your home so we are aware of what to pass along to potential buyers.
